Sleep Drawings
19 X 13 inches Series of works I made in an attempt to capture the moment when I move from consciousness into unconsciousness. To make these, as I went to bed each night, I placed a pencil on a piece of paper that was on my chest. I noted the time on the paper, and then shut off the light. As I fell asleep, my hand made a mark involuntarily. I saw this mark as a visual record of this moment of transformation. Like a phase change. We know that we've fallen asleep but can't pinpoint when. The next day, scanned the paper, inverted it in photoshop, and made a print. I then tried to recall any dreams I had the night before and drew that on the paper.
